Independence Day of Mauritius | March 12

Mauritius celebrates its National Day, marking independence from Britain in 1968 and becoming a republic in 1992. WAELE AFRICA Foundation congratulates the people of Mauritius on 58 years of independence, wishing continued peace, prosperity and happiness.

History

- Colonial Past: Mauritius was a prized target for European powers due to its strategic location, passing through Dutch, French, and British control.

- Independence: After Britain's 'Winds of Change' speech (1959), Mauritius moved towards self-rule, adopting a new constitution and gaining independence on March 12, 1968.

- Republic: Exactly 24 years later (March 12, 1992), Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth.

- Flag-Raising Ceremony: Official event with military parades and live music

- National Pride: Mauritians display their colourful flag across the island

Did you know? Mauritius was named by the Dutch in honour of Prince Maurits van Nassau in the 17th century.
